Cold Feet and the Earthing Mat
I love using my Universal Mat and my feet are planted on it every day while I’m at my computer, however, with the chilly winter weather I need to put socks on to keep my feet warm. I could move the mat to under my hands, however, I feel I get very strong earthing when it’s the bottom of my feet connected. So I decided to do a little experimenting with socks to see how much conductivity would be lost by wearing them.
Firstly it made sense to me that the socks may be more conductive if they had a small amount of silver or copper in them and, of course, after doing a search on the web “Wallah!” I found both silver and copper threaded socks and with a click of a button they were on their way to me.
I then did a little test and included “everyday” socks and stocking with the volt meter to see which ones conducted the best – here are my results
Situation | Volt Meter Reading |
Standing on carpeted floor | 1.260 |
Standing on Earthing mat barefoot | 0.016 |
Standing on Earthing mat with an "Everyday" sock | 0.420 |
Standing on Earthing mat with nylon type stockings | 0.100 |
Standing on Earthing mat with silver fibre "Golf" socks 1 ( $12.70) | 0.030 |
Standing on Earthing mat with copper fibre socks ($9.95) | 0.023 |
Standing on Earthing mat with silver fibre "Active" sock 2 ($29.00) | 0.016 |
As you can see the silver and copper socks came in much better than the “Everyday” socks – the "Active" the best - the same reading as bare feet, however, at nearly $30.00 a pair makes it an expensive option. The copper socks were also low and only $9.95 per pair. I also wore the ”Everyday” socks planted on the mat for about 30 mins and then tested again and this time the reading was much lower – around 0.100
CONCLUSION: Bare feet are best, however, if it is a requirement for you to wear socks to work the silver or copper socks will still give you good conductivity while moving on and off the mat. If you are going to be sitting at your desk for several hours your feet will naturally sweat and will lightly hydrate making them somewhat conductive thus making the "Everyday" socks OK as well - they are still much lower than not being Earthed at all.
MY SOLUTION: Bought a cheap cosy pair of socks at the local discount shop and cut a small oval hole out of them around the K1 point on the sole. Still basically have my bare feet on the mat and the rest of my foot is kept warm.
Love to hear any other creative ideas.
